Challenger BaseballCHALLENGER BASEBALL REGISTRATION FOR THE SPRING SEASON IS ONGOING UNTIL FEB. 19, 2010.

St. Charles Parish youth with mental or physical challenges are able to play recreational baseball as part of the National Little League Challenger Division baseball program, organized by the Recreation Department.

Teams are set up according to abilities rather than age. They can include as many as 15 to 20 players who participate in T-ball, coach-pitch or player-pitch. Each player gets a chance at bat, and a team is retired when the offense has gone through its entire roster. No score is kept during games.

The program encourages the use of “buddies” for Challenger players. Buddies assist players on the field but encourage them to bat and make plays themselves.

The program is available to mentally or physically challenged boys and girls ages 5 to 18 or until completion of high school. For more information contact Recreation Department Assistant Director Therese Theriot at (985) 783-5090.

THANKS TO THE COACHES, PLAYERS AND BUDDIES FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2009 CHALLENGER SEASON!
