Addition Details Released on Levee, Flood Protection Projects
Parish President Larry Cochran, local officials and levee stakeholders attended a summit on July 23 in Baton Rouge held by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Rep. Garret Graves to discuss coordination with the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain and other levee projects that recently received federal funding.
“This momentous occasion has been long coming for St. Charles Parish. With federal funding, this project is coming to fruition and it completes levee protection for the East Bank of our Parish,” said Parish President Larry Cochran. “The Corps stated the levee project will take 3-5 years for completion. Levee protection has been one of my top priorities since coming into office and I will continue to push for additional funding of levees in our Parish.”
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the purpose of the kickoff meeting, initiated by Graves, was to ensure that all stakeholders were aligned on projects.
“For 40 years we have been waiting and now it's finally becoming a reality. I am extremely proud of all the agencies that came together and made this possible,” said District VI Councilwoman Traci Fletcher of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain project. “Our Montz community can have peace of mind knowing that a complete flood protection system is in the works.
