The 61-Year-Old Building has a Unique History

Post Date:June 15, 2018 3:26 PM

Residents driving along River Road in Hahnville might notice ongoing construction while the Department of Planning and Zoning’s Office undergoes long-awaited renovations and an addition to the structure.

“A number of proposals for how to modernize the building have been considered over the past few years.” said Planning and Zoning Director Michael Albert. “We took a staff level and workflow approach this time, attempting to identify what our employees and the public would be best served by. From security updates, energy efficiency, to simply how people move through the building; this will be a dramatic improvement.”

A Historic Piece of St. Charles Parish

The Planning and Zoning Office was originally built in 1957 and served as a welfare office in the parish. It then served as a health unit before being acquired by parish government in 1998. Planning and Zoning relocated from the courthouse to the building in the same year.

“At one point in time, there were several departments in this building: Community Services, Economic Development, Grants and even a representative from the Social Security Office once a week,” said Planning Administrator Earl Matherne, a 26-year-employee. “The waiting room would get crowded very quickly and every now and then we have residents that still come in looking for those departments.”

Currently the building houses only the 19 employees of the Department of Planning and Zoning including planners, permitting technicians, code enforcers and the director.

The St. Charles Parish Council awarded the contract for the renovations to Frickey Brothers Construction at their May 21 meeting. The work is set to last for six months.

The mission of St. Charles Parish government is to provide high quality, efficient services to sustain and enhance the quality of life for all residents of St. Charles Parish.
